Bateman was born on September 25, 1969 in St. Louis, Missouri to Jeri (née Steele) and Michael Bateman. His father was a businessman and his mother was a homemaker. He has two sisters, Jodi and Julie.
Bateman attended Maryville College in Maryville, Missouri, where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity. He then studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, but dropped out after one year to pursue an acting career.
Bateman made his debut on the television series “The Wonder Years” in 1988. After appearing in minor roles on several shows, he had his breakthrough role as Kevin Arnold in the 1990 CBS series “The Kevin Show”. He played the role for five seasons until it ended in 1995.
In 1996, Bateman starred opposite Winona Ryder in “Johnny Dangerously”. The film was not well received by critics, but it was a commercial success and grossed over $50 million worldwide.
